Inuyama STATCOM
The World’s First Commercial Installation
Building upon VSC-based STATCOM technology developed in the 1970s and 1980s, Mitsubishi Electric developed the first gate turnoff thyristor (GTO)-based STATCOM in the early 1990s. Its capacity totalled 80 MVA. For more than 20 years, the Inuyama STATCOM has proven the effectiveness of STATCOM technology.
PURPOSE: Mitsubishi Electric designed, manufactured and installed a STATCOM at the Kansai Electric Power Company’s Inuyama hydroelectric power plant switching station. The customer commissioned Mitsubishi Electric to improve small-signal stability (i.e., increase damping) of a 154kV line for increasing transmission capabilities to customers in the city of Osaka, nearly 107 miles from the switching station.
