FACTS Solutions

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has been a world leader in the development, design and production of FACTS for more than 40 years helping electrical utility companies supply reliable, high quality power to their customers. In the early 1970’s Mitsubishi Electric developed Static Var Compensators (SVC’s) by combining thyristor technology with reactors and capacitors and in 1991 the company supplied the worlds first Voltage Sourced Converter (VSC) based STATCOM.  Development and innovation is a key feature at Mitsubishi Electric and these earlier devices are the forerunners of the latest systems the company has to offer.

The SVC-Diamond (TM) Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) is a new addition to the Mitsubishi Electric product portfolio. This is an advanced FACTS device which gives users voltage sourced converter technology to provide the electrical transmission grid with reactive power compensation. A STATCOM has a number of advantages compared to a conventional Static Var Compensator (SVC), one being a superior low voltage output capacity compared to an SVC.

Typical transmission systems applications of a STATCOM include:

  • Controlling Transmission Line voltage
  • Increasing Steady State Power transfer capability
  • Enhancing Transient Stability
  • Preventing voltage instability
  • Augmenting system damping
  • Improving High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link performance
  • Enhancing small signal stability
  • Over voltage suppression

Key features of SVC-Diamond (TM) include:

  • Superior low voltage output capacity
  • Superior overvoltage suppression
  • Stable operation when applied to weak systems
  • Extremely low levels of harmonics
  • No need for filtering
  • Reduced voltage loss
  • Small footprint

A customised SVC-Diamond (TM) STATCOM can help an electrical utility overcome the most complex transmission related challenges.

Mitsubishi Electric also offers a wide range of conventional high performance FACTS devices, such as SVC’s, for transmission systems voltages from 66kV to 765kV with typical overall ratings from 50MVAr to 800MVAr.

Typical applications for these systems include:

  • Voltage control
  • System regulation improvements under varying load conditions
  • increased steady state power transfer capability
  • Greater transient stability
  • voltage instability prevention
  • System damping augmentation
  • HVDC System damping augmentation
  • sub synchronous resonance mitigation.
